Mildew and Humidity The most common cause of paint discoloration can be explained as Mildew. Mildew is a form of fungi. Most commonly appear as black in color. Some species are red or green. It is usually appeared on walls where air circulation is limited or restricted. Mildew appears as dirt on the painted surface.
Mildew can be removed by applying a household bleach solution. Mildew can usually wipe out in couple of minutes. It is important to use fresh bleach because it deteriorates upon aging.
Before painting in wet tropical climates where mildew occurs, any traces of mildew should be removed and thoroughly rinsed. The mildew must be eliminated fully otherwise it could grow through the new paint coats. Use fine grade sand paper or sponge to scrub the painted surface, along with the following solution, to exterminate mildew. Following solution may use to remove mildew on a wall.
• 1/3 cup household detergent
• 1 quarter household bleach
• 1 liter warm water
When the surface is clean, rinse with fresh water. Avoid splashing the solution on yourself or on plants. Allow to dry the wall surface and repaint with the Lionlac or Tokyolac Acrylic Filler and apply a coat of Lionlac or Tokyolac paint.
